*tip* VGS on XP/2000/NT - January 16, 2002 by aldo
Many users have upgraded to XP believing the BS from M$ marketing. Contrary to their claims, many Win9x applications do not run on XP (even with the useless compatibility mode).
If you want PSX emulation on XP or in Windows 2000,
install an ASPI Layer and
use ePSXe, PSinex, FPSE, AdriPSX or PSEmu Pro. Other alternatives to play VGS under XP/2000 require that you install Win9x as secondary OS: a dual boot XP/9x (install 98/ME first, then install XP in another disk/partition), or use
Connectix Virtual PC
*update July 16/2002* VGS is now playable using
SaPu's CVGS Patch for Win2K/XP or
CVGS Video Patch XP.

ResHack. You just have to open any hacked version of VGS (like

For all the owners of notebooks who asked the method, here it is:
Just install the device "Standart Game Port" from Control Panel / Add New hardware / Add a new device / manual / sound, video and game controllers / Standart system devices.
With this you install a virtual port where the drivers work on. The same applies for those who wants to use a game port joystick besides the NTPAD.

*tip* Hide DOS window in PSX emus - July 15, 2001 by aldo
Using SpeedUp to start emulators like ePSXe or FPSE, don't only increase its speed (by changing the process priority,
/m freeing memory and
/k killing unnecessary background tasks) but also hides the ugly debugging window in DOS mode.
For FPSE create a link with a command like this:

For ePSXe create a link with a command like this:

*tip* Listen MP3 while play VGS - June 27, 2001 by aldo
Probably many of you already know, and others not, that you can play MP3 in Windows Media Player while you play in VGS. I recommend that use
mplayer2.exe from Start/Run for Media Player 6.x, due Windows Media Player 7 uses more system resources and causes heavy frame skips.
This tip is very useful if you're using backups with sound ripped or when you're tired of the boring background music in your game.

Danil Galimov (the cool co-programmer of
[pec]) informed that this tip also works with
WinAmp. You should to use the Nullsoft's DirectSound plugin and have configured the Primary Sound Driver.

*tip* Speedup VGS? - May 30, 2001 by aldo
This tip comes from
Fresh_meat. It describes a "bug" that he found and
apparently it could help you accelerate VGS in slow machines. Read his description:
1. I run VGS. 2. I pause gameplay. 3. Switch to windows desktop. 4. Connect to my ISP, with my 33.6k modem. 5. Check my mails with Outlook Express and close it.
6. Open ICQ. 7. Close ICQ. 8. Disconnect from my ISP. 9. Get back to VGS.
Result: VGS can no longer emulate sound for the rest of the time it's opened, and the speed doubles (aporximately)
I couldn't reproduce the "bug", but feel free to discuss about this topic in the forum.
VGS in Win2K with Virtual PC Preview 2 - May 25, 2001 by aldo
I tested VGS in the new version of
Virtual PC (PC emulator for Windows), and yes it worked using Windows 2000 as Host in a "Virtual PC" running Windows 95. It's highly recommended that you apply the Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000. However do not expect VGS to be fast.
Virtual PC is also useful in Win9x/Me as a work around to have save state in VGS (the file is stored in C:\Windows\Application Data when you shutdown the "Virtual PC") meaning that you can save in *any game at any time* (even in VGS demo). Also you may run VGS in window mode :)))

*tip* ePSXe with DaeMount - January 31, 2001 by aldo
1. I have some ISO images that work better in
ePSXe that in VGS.
The best way to start the games by double-clicking the ISO and let DaeMount decide which emulator to use was adding the following code to
C:\Windows\DaeMount.ini:
if image = "c:\cds\Fatal_Fury.ISO" then
C:\ePSXe101\ePSXe.exe -nogui -loadbin c:\cds\Fatal_Fury.ISO
else
vgs.exe
end if
2. When I need to set a GPU plugin for an specific game I can use the following code as example in
C:\Windows\DaeMount.ini:
if gameid = slus-00000 then
setregistry HKEY_CURRENT_USER, "\Software\epsxe\config\", "VideoPlugin", "gpuPeteSoft.dll"
C:\ePSXe101\ePSXe.exe -nogui -f

C:\ePSXe101\ePSXe.exe -nogui -f

People that use both PSEmu Pro and ePSXe have noticed that you need your plugins duplicated, in ePSXe\Plugins and in PSEmuPro\Plugin directories.

*tip* Multi Disk Games/FF9 tips - December 3, 2000 by aldo
I read in
EmuForums.com in a post from Zidane_85 that a way of making some FF9 FMV's work in CD 3 is loading the saved game with the CD 1 first, then changing to CD 3.
But if you're using
Daemon Tools, you should do this procedure to change from disk 1 to disk 3:
1. Press Alt-Tab and eject the ISO (instead of unmount),
2. Return to VGS so FF9 interpret the disk was ejected,
3. Press Alt-Tab again mount the other disk and return to VGS.
This procedure of changing ISO disks should work with other multi-disks games too. Thanks Zemus for test this ;o)

VGSAutoRun to run automatically VGS 1.4 or VGS 1.3 for specific games ejected by VGS 1.41, using the Bleem or
PSEmu Pro slots in the program.
Also
DaeMount users may configure the daemount.ini to run VGS 1.4 or VGS 1.3 on specific games too using daemount's scripting capability (see the example in the zip file).

PSX Sound Recorder! - September 25, 2000 by aldo
This time the
experimental tool is a PlayStation emulator sound recorder. It records the sound of your games using your microphone, then save it as WAV. It may be used for recording your voice too.
I personally don't recommend it as a real tool for recording games, but it's great for playing with your mic :)

Easy Mount with Daemon - September 20, 2000 by aldo
I have created this small registry fix that allows you to mount ISO, CUE and CCD images (not necessarily PSX games) by double-clicking on the image file icon. Also add the Edit option to CUE files. Requires Daemon Tools 2.x.
*UPDATE:
It's highly recommended that you use DaeMount instead if you're using Daemon Tools 2.2 or above.

Differences between PSX Models - July 7, 2000 by aldo
Over MacIntoast message board I found these interesting post from a guy with the handle:
MaRk.
"The SCPH-1001 had the ROM chip which allowed imports to be played with the Swap Trick. Later on, Sony Re-wrote the
SCPH-1001 ROM chip and disabled the Swap Trick. The SCPH-1001 also had BAD heating problems and poor Lense Calibration. Then they made the
SCPH-5000 series and the 7000 series. This fixed the Heating and Lense problem. They made the 7500 series to make it Harder to MOD Chip, but they
figured out." "... [SCPH-9001] the Audio CD PLayer has the Sound Scope function when you play audio CDs. This function started
with the SCPH-7xxx series... [Sony] took out some useless components to save cost. That's why there is NO Parallel I/O port... also made the logic board smaller to make it harder to MOD Chip."

*new* VGSMod 1.4 for Windows - July 3, 2000 by aldo
This is a Windows port of the VGSMod 1.4 created by SunTzu7 that should be
easier to use than the DOS interface. All the credits should go to SunTzu7, who is the real cracker. I made a slight modification to reduce the patch code, so files patched with SunTzu7 version will not be 100% identical to mine.

Speed up tip? - June 30, 2000 by aldo
According to Lockergnome's newsletter, adding CPUPriority=1 in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\BIOS may help speeding up the CPU priority. However it may not be noticeable on some systems.
You may try this tweak downloading the
Speedup.reg and double-click it. The changes are done after rebooting.
